It's certainly possible, but that usage of trainspotter isn't very common in the UK, you'd be more likely to be called an Anorak which is both broader and less likely to be confused for an actual trainspotter. The jakey turns out to be Begbies Father, although Begbie does not state this I think Renton confirms it during his narration. This then leads to Begbie giving a random person a good kicking.
