Can i burn pallets

I frequently make soup, stew and chili on the wood stove. Smells great cooking for hours. My condolences about the loss of your husband. I agree re: blessings to those who also process their own firewood. The pallets themselves are unmarked, and mostly unpainted, but, depending on the pallet, they either have blue, orange, or red paint just on the ends of some of the planks. The thing is, even if only the corners are marked with color, it could signify that the whole pallet had been treated in some type of way.

Hello good-Julius. In a log burner it burns warm with an orange flame but by no means exceptionally hot. I burn it almost exclusively with no problems and a clean chimney which seldom needs to be swept due to very little residue build up. Picked up a bunch of pallets today. Some actually seem like decent quality hardwood — maybe even oak.

They have that slightly reddish color like the oak rounds I split recently. Trying to mix the pine pallet wood with split rounds. I found a sifter my neighbor gave me years ago. When I empty the wood stove ashes I use it to filter out the nails. Sometimes after cutting one end of the top slats they can be taken off by bending and moving back and forth.

Also on the way to get the pallets picked up some old 2x4s from the side of the road. There was also a door so I believe it was from an inside removal. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. Is it safe to store the chips in this manner?

I guess you just have to hope the company producing the pallet is being honest. Reply 4 years ago. Just because it says HT doesn't mean it is safe. It could have been heat treated 5 years ago and every board on it replaced with a non HT board. This article is written by someone who doesn't even work in the pallet industry. Let me tell you just because it says HT doesn't mean it is safe. How can you be so wrong in such a short comment?

Legally they can't just swap out boards that don't match the HT label. Does it happen? Sure, but not usual unless the business is shady. Thank you! Well done, sir, for sharing the much needed information! Did you make this project? Share it with us! I Made It! Reply Upvote.

You can reuse or recycle treated pallets, but you need to consider the treatment method and what you're going to use the pallets for. If you just need secondhand pallets to use in your business, then all treated pallets are safe to use. That's what they're designed for, after all. If you plan to recycle the wood from treated pallets in your garden or to build furniture, then you should only use heat treated pallets.

Methyl bromide can seep out of the wood and into your garden bed, but there is no risk when using heat treated pallets because there was no chemical treatment. You cannot use methyl bromide treated pallets as firewood since the pesticide will be released with the smoke when the pallets are burned. You can burn heat treated pallets safely since they have not been chemically treated. If pallets do not have a stamp indicating the treatment method used, it could mean that the pallets are untreated, or it could be that the pallet was treated but not stamped by mistake.

The only way to know for sure is to check with the original manufacturer. Untreated pallets cannot be used for export purposes or if the goods being carried are sensitive to pests. If pallets are unmarked, you shouldn't risk using them in your garden, as furniture, or as firewood since you can't be sure they're untreated.

Plastic pallets do not need to be treated to comply with IPCC regulations since pests and parasites cannot live in the plastic. It is not that easy to detect wood that has been treated with insecticides. Wood that has been treated with fire retardants will have a brownish or maybe a rusty stain color to them. The stickers of under bunks of lumber are even sometimes being treated. Due to being cautious, when choosing shipping wood, I knew it was best not to get it.

I find that the heavy EURO pallets are the best, using around of them in the winters. My steel wood-stove the biggest one made by PRITY , with a firebox that is about 65cm cube, with a water-heater right under the flue.
